Great news for Australian homeowners and small businesses: from 1 July 2025, the Federal Government will launch a major initiative to make solar home batteries more affordable, helping families cut their energy bills by as much as 90%.

Under the $2.3 billion Cheaper Home Batteries Program, households can expect a 30% reduction in the cost of a typical installed battery — a saving of around $4,000. The goal? Over one million new solar home battery installations by 2030, making clean, reliable energy more accessible to more Australians.

According to government analysis, households with existing rooftop solar could save up to $1,100 a year, while those installing both solar panels and a battery could save up to $2,300 annually — nearly wiping out a typical electricity bill.

This program empowers Australians to store solar energy for use when it’s needed most — reducing reliance on the grid and putting power back in the hands of families.

Currently, while one in three households have rooftop solar, only one in forty have a battery. This new initiative aims to close that gap and bring affordable battery storage to the mainstream.

The discount will be delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, which has safely supported solar uptake since 2011. Not only will this help individual households, but it will also lower peak demand on the grid, pushing down prices for everyone.

Small businesses and community facilities will also benefit, with subsidies available for battery systems of up to 100 kWh.

This battery subsidy is just one part of Labor’s broader energy plan, which includes:

• $150 in direct energy bill relief for every household and nearly one million small businesses from July 1.

• A $1 billion Household Energy Upgrades Fund to help finance energy-efficient appliances and home improvements.

• An $800 million Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative to reduce bills and improve comfort for social housing residents.

• A $100 million Community Energy Upgrades Fund for local facilities like libraries, sporting fields and community centres.

In contrast, alternative energy policies — such as the Opposition’s proposed $600 billion nuclear plan — risk increasing household energy costs by up to $1,200.
